Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction | Boosting Process Upgrades in the LNG Industry

Recently, the construction of a 90,000 tons/year LNG production unit project at a chemical company in Ningxia was completed by the end of December 2022 after almost a year of work. On April 12, 2023, various processes began receiving gas and feeding materials for trial production. Just four days later, qualified LNG was successfully produced. After 72 hours of continuous stable operation, the hourly LNG production reached over 10 tons.

The project combines the production of synthetic ammonia with liquefied natural gas (LNG), offering advantages such as low investment, low consumption, no pollution, and high energy utilization. It is an excellent choice for coking enterprises. The optimized process "grafts" onto the original synthetic ammonia process by pre-treating, purifying, transforming (original), decarbonizing (original), desulfurizing precisely, and methane conversion (existing modification) of coke oven gas. The purification of process gases adopts deep cryogenic separation method while gas liquefaction utilizes a combination of mixed refrigerant cycle + nitrogen refrigeration cycle + liquid nitrogen washing process to separate CH and CmHn compounds at low temperatures.

At the same time, the conversion units in the original synthetic ammonia plant including first-stage furnace, second-stage furnace, and waste heat boiler will be shut down. The hydrogen-rich gas separated through deep cryogenic separation will be combined with nitrogen in a ratio of three to one and sent to the existing synthetic ammonia plant to produce 150 thousand tons/year of liquid ammonia. Based on the existing 150 thousand tons/year synthesis ammonia plant using coke oven gas as feedstock, this project aims to establish a circular economy utilizing 90 thousand tons/year LNG from coke oven gas production.

The project mainly consumes energy in the form of electricity and residual coke oven gas, with an annual electricity consumption of 30,295.40 million kWh and a consumption of 48,000 million m³ of residual coke oven gas. The annual production of LNG is 90,000 tons. It is hoped that Senlan can provide comprehensive energy consumption data for customers after the technical transformation of the equipment: 156,621.04 tce (equivalent value) and 207,911.15 tce (equivalent value). Among them, the monthly increase in comprehensive energy consumption due to the production of 90,000 tons of LNG is 4,399.37 tce (equivalent value) and 27,618.65 tce (equivalent value).

According to reports, based on current market conditions for LNG, the project will generate an average annual increase in sales revenue for the company amounting to CNY450 million and an average annual increase in profit amounting to CNY225 million. At the same time, there has been a slight increase in capacity for ammonia synthesis at the company's original plant while reducing consumption by discontinuing catalytic conversion processes. This has resulted in improved efficiency and significantly enhanced overall market competitiveness for the company.

The successful operation of the 90,000 tons/year LNG project utilizing coke oven gas in a circular economy not only marks a small step for Senlan's high-power transmission control products in the LNG industry but also holds significant importance in terms of economic benefits, social benefits, and environmental benefits.

At the same time, by replacing civilian fuels such as gasoline and diesel with clean natural gas LNG produced through this project, it reduces vehicle exhaust emissions and improves local environmental quality. Thus achieving "two-way emission reduction" of pollutants.
